How to Inspect Exterior Wiring Around Your Home

A loose cable near the meter, a cracked outdoor outlet cover, or a light that flickers after rain can be easy to ignore. But exterior electrical components live with moisture, temperature swings, sun exposure, landscaping equipment, and occasional pests. Knowing how to inspect exterior wiring from a safe distance helps you catch warning signs early, before a small issue becomes a shock hazard, a failed circuit, or a costly repair.

This is a homeowner visual inspection, not a do-it-yourself electrical repair. Outdoor wiring can remain energized even when a light or outlet is not working. Keep hands, tools, ladders, and water away from anything damaged, and call a qualified electrician when something does not look right.

Start With a Safe Exterior Walkaround

Choose a dry day with good daylight. Do not inspect electrical equipment during rain, snow, high winds, or standing-water conditions. Walk the perimeter of your home slowly, looking at the electrical service equipment, outdoor outlets, lighting, wiring routes, and any power supplied to detached structures.

Stay on the ground whenever possible. A damaged service cable, overhead line, or connection near the roofline is not something to inspect up close. If you see a wire hanging low, touching a tree branch, or pulled away from the home, keep people and pets away from the area. If a line may have fallen or is sparking, treat it as an emergency and contact the utility provider or emergency services from a safe location.

Your goal is simple: look for visible damage, moisture exposure, loose equipment, and changes in performance. You do not need to remove covers, open panels, touch wires, or test connections to identify many problems.

How to Inspect Exterior Wiring Without Touching It

Begin where utility power enters the home. Depending on the property, you may see an overhead service drop, a service mast, a meter, conduit, and an exterior disconnect. These parts should appear secure, intact, and properly supported.

Look for a service cable that appears loose, frayed, sagging unusually low, or rubbed against siding, gutters, or tree limbs. Also watch for cracked conduit, missing straps, rusting connections, or a meter base that looks tilted, separated from the wall, or water-stained. Do not touch the meter, service cable, or connections around it. These components may carry high voltage even if the main breaker inside is off.

Next, follow any visible wiring runs along walls, under decks, around patios, or toward a garage, shed, hot tub, landscape lighting transformer, or air-conditioning equipment. Exterior wiring should be protected in appropriate conduit or approved cable and secured so it cannot be pulled, pinched, or damaged by normal activity.

A cable that was once neatly attached but now hangs loosely deserves attention. So does wiring that disappears beneath mulch, runs across a walkway, is fastened with makeshift hardware, or looks exposed where it should be enclosed. Yard work, deck repairs, siding projects, and rodent activity can all damage wiring without immediately causing a complete outage.

Check Outdoor Outlets and Covers

Outdoor receptacles are exposed to some of the toughest conditions around the home. Check every exterior outlet you can safely reach, including outlets on the front porch, rear patio, deck, garage exterior, and near HVAC equipment.

The cover should close fully and protect the receptacle from rain and debris. If an outlet is used while a cord is plugged in, it generally needs a weatherproof in-use cover that shields the connection rather than leaving it exposed. Look for cracked plastic, missing screws, broken hinges, discoloration, corrosion, or a receptacle that sits loose in its box.

Many outdoor outlets should have ground-fault circuit interrupter protection, commonly identified by TEST and RESET buttons either on the outlet itself or upstream on another protected outlet. If you know how to use the built-in test button and the area is dry, testing the device can confirm whether it trips and resets. If it will not reset, trips repeatedly, feels warm, makes noise, or shows burn marks, stop using it and schedule service.

Never use an outdoor outlet that is wet, damaged, loose, or intermittently powered. Avoid covering a damaged receptacle with tape or relying on an extension cord as a long-term solution. Those temporary fixes can hide a problem while allowing moisture or heat to build up.

Look Closely at Exterior Lights and Fixtures

Porch lights, floodlights, motion sensors, post lights, and security lighting should sit firmly against their mounting surface. A fixture that wobbles, pulls away from the wall, collects water inside its globe, or has a cracked lens can allow moisture to reach electrical connections.

Turn lights on from their normal switches only. Look for flickering, delayed operation, buzzing, bulbs that burn out often, or lights that work only after the weather dries out. A single failed bulb may be simple, but repeated issues can point to water intrusion, a loose connection, an overloaded circuit, or an aging fixture.

Pay attention to heat as well. Do not touch a fixture that may be energized or hot. From a safe distance, look for melted plastic, scorched siding, discoloration around the base, or a fixture that appears to have overheated. These are reasons to turn off the circuit if you can do so safely at the panel and call an electrician.

Watch for Weather, Landscaping, and Pest Damage

The Mid-Atlantic climate puts exterior electrical systems through humid summers, freezing winters, wind-driven rain, and rapid temperature changes. Seals harden, covers crack, metal corrodes, and water can find its way into the smallest opening.

During your walkaround, check for these common signs of exposure or physical damage:

Do not trim branches near power lines yourself. A tree company and the utility provider may need to coordinate work if branches are close to an energized service line. Likewise, do not dig near known underground wiring routes without taking the proper precautions. Underground damage is not always visible from the surface.

Notice Changes Inside the House, Too

An exterior wiring problem does not always announce itself outside. You may notice that patio lights dim when an appliance starts, a garage outlet stops working after rain, a breaker trips when you use holiday lights, or a GFCI outlet will not reset. These symptoms provide useful clues, especially when you can tell an electrician which circuit is affected and when the trouble occurs.

Make a short note of what you observed: the location, weather conditions, whether anything was plugged in, and whether a breaker or GFCI tripped. Photos taken from a safe distance can also help document visible damage. Do not open an exterior junction box or remove a fixture to investigate further. Electrical faults can be hidden behind a cover, and a loose connection can create heat without obvious external damage.

When to Call a Professional Right Away

Some exterior electrical issues should not wait for a routine inspection. Arrange prompt service if you see smoke, sparks, scorch marks, melted insulation, exposed conductors, water inside an electrical box, or a repeatedly tripping breaker. The same is true for a damaged meter base, a loose service connection, or a wire that has been struck by a vehicle, fallen branch, or landscaping equipment.

A professional inspection is also a smart choice before adding an EV charger, hot tub, generator, outdoor kitchen, pool equipment, new landscape lighting, or a detached garage circuit. These projects often require more than adding an outlet. The electrician needs to evaluate circuit capacity, grounding, weather protection, wire sizing, routing, and applicable local code requirements.
