What to Expect During a Home Rewire

Get A Fast Quote

A home rewire is a significant project, so it helps to know how it unfolds from start to finish. While every home is different, a rewire follows a general sequence: assessment and planning, permitting, running the new wiring, inspection, and finishing. Knowing the steps helps you understand the process, plan around it, and know what a good rewire includes.

Here is what to expect during a home rewire.

Step 1: Assessment and planning

The process begins with a thorough assessment. The electrician evaluates your existing wiring, panel, and system, identifies what needs replacing, and plans the scope of the rewire. This is where decisions are made about the wiring, outlet and switch locations, any panel upgrade, and how to route the new wiring with the least disruption. You will also discuss the timeline, the wall repair plan, and what to expect.

Step 2: Permits

A rewire requires a permit, which your electrician pulls. Permitting ensures the work is inspected and meets code, which protects your safety, insurance, and resale value. The permit is part of every proper rewire, and your electrician handles the process.

Step 3: Running the new wiring

This is the core of the project. The electrician runs new wiring throughout the home, which involves:

If a panel upgrade is part of the project, it is done as part of this work.

Step 4: Rough-in inspection

Before the walls are closed up, a rough-in inspection takes place. The inspector verifies the new wiring meets code while it is still visible. This is a key milestone, and the walls are not patched until the rough-in passes, so that any needed corrections can be made while everything is accessible.

Step 5: Finishing and devices

After the rough-in passes and any openings are patched, the electrician completes the finish work: installing new outlets, switches, and cover plates, connecting fixtures, and finalizing the panel. Older devices are typically replaced with new ones as part of the rewire, and modern protections like GFCI and AFCI are added where required.

Step 6: Final inspection

A final inspection confirms the completed system is safe and meets code. Once it passes, the rewire is certified as compliant. Your electrician then confirms everything works, reviews the new setup with you, and leaves you with a labeled panel and a modern, safe electrical system.

The power and disruption

Throughout the project, expect the power to be off in work areas, and sometimes the whole home, at various stages, along with some dust and wall openings to patch. A rewire typically takes from a few days to a couple of weeks depending on the home’s size and scope. Your electrician provides a schedule so you can plan around the disruption.

During a home rewire, expect an assessment and plan, permitting, running the new wiring throughout the home, a rough-in inspection before the walls are closed, finishing with new devices and modern protections, and a final inspection. The project involves power interruptions and some wall repair over a few days to a couple of weeks. A licensed electrician manages each step to deliver a safe, code-compliant, modern electrical system.

I called Stella Electric about flickering lights in my home and spoke with Rich. He recommended contacting BGE first, explaining that the problem could be on the utility’s supply side. He even gave me a script to avoid any pushback from the utility company - turns out it wasn’t necessary, but it still was great to have in my back pocket. He was absolutely right, and his advice saved me the cost of having an electrician come out to diagnose it.I really appreciated him taking the time to help me over the phone and steering me toward the right solution. That kind of honesty and care builds trust and earns a loyal, long term customer. Stella Electric will be my first call the next time I need electrical work. Thank you, Rich and Stella Electric!
