What to Do During Power Outages at Your Home

A dark house, a silent HVAC system, and a refrigerator that has stopped humming can make power outages feel urgent fast. The right response depends on whether the problem affects your whole neighborhood or only your home – and knowing the difference can protect your family, appliances, and electrical system.

For homeowners in Baltimore and throughout the Mid-Atlantic, storms are a common cause. High winds, ice, heavy rain, falling branches, vehicle accidents, and overloaded utility equipment can all interrupt service. First, Determine Whether the Outage Is Inside or Outside

Start by looking outside safely. If neighboring homes and streetlights are also dark, the issue is likely on the utility side. Report the outage to your electric utility, then avoid downed lines, damaged poles, and standing water near electrical equipment. Treat every downed line as energized, even if it appears harmless.

If your neighbors still have power, check whether your home has a partial outage or a full outage. Some rooms working while others are dark often points to a tripped breaker, a failed circuit, or a wiring issue. Check your electrical panel for breakers that have moved to the middle or OFF position. A breaker that has tripped should be switched fully OFF before being reset to ON.

Do not keep resetting a breaker that immediately trips again. That breaker is doing its job by responding to a fault, overload, or damaged appliance. Repeatedly forcing it back on can create a shock or fire risk. Unplug devices on that circuit and arrange professional troubleshooting if the problem continues.

A complete loss of power in your home while nearby homes remain lit may involve the main breaker, service equipment, meter connection, or panel. This is not a DIY repair. What to Do During Power Outages Safely

Once you know the immediate danger is outside or has been professionally assessed, focus on keeping the household safe and limiting damage. An unopened refrigerator generally keeps food cold for about four hours, while a full freezer can hold its temperature for roughly 48 hours. Use flashlights rather than candles. Candles are easy to knock over, particularly when children, pets, or people are moving through dark rooms. Keep spare batteries in an accessible place, not in a garage cabinet you have to search for during an emergency.

Turn off or unplug sensitive electronics when the power is out. A surge can occur when utility power returns, and televisions, computers, gaming systems, smart-home hubs, and chargers are vulnerable. Whole-home surge protection offers a stronger layer of defense than power strips alone, but it should be installed at the electrical panel by a qualified professional.

If you rely on an electric medical device, have a backup plan before severe weather arrives. That may include a battery system, a generator sized for essential circuits, or a temporary location with reliable power. For an immediate medical emergency, call 911.

Avoid opening the electrical panel if there is water nearby, if the panel is hot, or if you smell smoke. Move away from the area and call for emergency help. Electrical hazards can remain active even when lights are out.

Generator Safety Is Not Optional

Portable and standby generators can make an outage more manageable, but improper use is dangerous. Carbon monoxide from a portable generator is colorless and odorless, and it can become deadly before anyone recognizes the danger.

Never run a portable generator in a garage, basement, shed, porch, or near open windows and doors. It belongs outside in a dry, well-ventilated location, positioned away from the home. Use heavy-duty extension cords rated for the load, and keep cords clear of puddles, walkways, and damaged areas.

Never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet. This practice, sometimes called backfeeding, can energize utility lines and put utility workers, neighbors, and your own home at serious risk. It can also damage appliances and electrical equipment when power is restored.

A properly installed transfer switch or interlock lets a generator power selected circuits without sending electricity back onto utility lines. For households that want dependable backup for a sump pump, refrigerator, medical equipment, heating equipment, internet, or essential lighting, a standby generator may be the better long-term choice. The right system depends on the size of the home, the electrical load, fuel availability, and which appliances truly need to run during an outage.

Why Some Homes Lose Power More Often

A single outage after a major storm is usually a utility event. Frequent breaker trips, lights that dim when an appliance starts, warm outlets, buzzing sounds, or repeated partial outages are different. Those symptoms can signal an aging panel, loose connection, undersized circuit, aluminum wiring issue, or electrical system that no longer fits the way your household uses power.

Older homes across Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and Pennsylvania were not designed for today’s electrical demand. Central air conditioning, induction ranges, home offices, large televisions, electric vehicle chargers, hot tubs, and smart-home devices all add load. An electrical panel upgrade can create room for new circuits and improve the safe distribution of power throughout the home. It is not necessary for every homeowner, and a qualified electrician should evaluate the actual condition and capacity first. In some cases, the fix is as focused as replacing a damaged outlet or separating overloaded rooms onto new circuits. In others, a broader upgrade is the safer answer.

Prepare Before the Next Outage

A little preparation can turn a stressful night into an inconvenience. Keep flashlights, fresh batteries, a battery-powered phone charger, bottled water, and a basic first-aid kit in a known location. If you use a sump pump, test it before storm season and consider backup power if your basement has a history of flooding.

Make sure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms have fresh batteries and are working correctly. This matters even more when people use fireplaces, portable generators, or alternative heat sources during an outage. Never use an oven or gas range to heat the home, and do not bring grills, camp stoves, or fuel-burning heaters indoors.

It also helps to know where your electrical panel is and which breakers control major areas of the house. Clear access to the panel, label circuits accurately, and avoid storing flammable materials nearby. These small details save time when a problem needs attention.

When to Call an Electrician

Call an electrician when the outage is isolated to your home, only part of the home has lost power, breakers will not reset, lights flicker without an obvious utility issue, or you see signs of heat or damage around outlets and the panel. If there is smoke, sparking, a burning odor, or an active electrical fire, leave the area and call 911 first.
