What Is the National Electrical Code?

Get A Fast Quote

The National Electrical Code, or NEC, is the model standard for safe electrical installation in the United States. Officially known as NFPA 70, it is published by the National Fire Protection Association and sets the requirements that electrical work should meet to protect people and property from hazards like fire and shock. When an electrician says work must be done “to code,” the National Electrical Code is usually what they mean.

Here is what the National Electrical Code is and why it matters.

What the NEC is

The National Electrical Code is a comprehensive set of requirements for the safe installation of electrical wiring and equipment. Published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) as NFPA 70, its purpose is to safeguard people and property from the hazards that arise from electricity, primarily fire and shock. It is the foundational standard for residential, commercial, and industrial electrical work.

It is a model code

An important thing to understand is that the National Electrical Code is a model code, not a law by itself. The NFPA develops and publishes it, but it becomes enforceable only when a state or local jurisdiction adopts it. Once adopted, it becomes the electrical code that applies in that area, enforced through permits and inspections.

Jurisdictions may also amend the code or adopt a particular edition, so the specific requirements that apply can vary by location. This is why electricians refer to the applicable local code, which is based on the NEC.

What the NEC covers

The National Electrical Code covers virtually every aspect of an electrical installation, including:

In short, it addresses how to install electrical systems safely from the service all the way to the outlets.

Why it matters for your home

The National Electrical Code matters because electrical work in your home must meet the adopted code to be safe and legal. Code compliance:

When you hire a licensed electrician, part of what you are paying for is work that meets the applicable code.

The National Electrical Code is the model standard for safe electrical installation in the United States, published by the NFPA as NFPA 70. It is a model code that becomes enforceable when a state or local jurisdiction adopts it, and it covers everything from wiring and grounding to panels and GFCI protection. Because electrical work must meet the applicable code for safety, insurance, and resale, hiring a licensed electrician who works to code is essential.

Daniel came to install our EV charger and did a phenomenal job. He needed to get more wire for the installation which was not in the original quote and was very transparent in what he had to do. He stayed well after 6pm to complete the work and did a stellar job and explained everything. Overall, great experience and recommend without reservation.
Response from the owner: Good Afternoon,Thank you for your kind review. We do everything in our power to keep our clients satisfied. We appreciate you and your business. We will pass your praise on to Danny our sentiment is the same! Gratefully,Stella
I called Stella Electric about flickering lights in my home and spoke with Rich. He recommended contacting BGE first, explaining that the problem could be on the utility’s supply side. He even gave me a script to avoid any pushback from the utility company - turns out it wasn’t necessary, but it still was great to have in my back pocket. He was absolutely right, and his advice saved me the cost of having an electrician come out to diagnose it.I really appreciated him taking the time to help me over the phone and steering me toward the right solution. That kind of honesty and care builds trust and earns a loyal, long term customer. Stella Electric will be my first call the next time I need electrical work. Thank you, Rich and Stella Electric!
