What Is Tapering During EV Charging?

Get A Fast Quote

Tapering during EV charging is the gradual reduction in the charging rate as the battery fills up, with charging fastest when the battery is lower and slowing as it approaches full, which the vehicle does to protect the battery and charge it safely. It is a normal, designed-in part of how EVs charge, not a fault, and it shapes the charging curve. Understanding tapering explains why charging is not a constant speed and why the last portion of a charge takes proportionally longer.

Here is what tapering during EV charging is.

The charging rate is not constant

A key thing to understand about EV charging is that the rate is not constant throughout. Instead, charging follows a curve: it is faster when the battery is at a lower state of charge and slows as the battery fills toward full. This gradual reduction in rate as the battery fills is called tapering. So rather than charging at one steady speed, an EV charges faster early and tapers off as it approaches full.

Why charging tapers

Charging tapers to protect the battery. Lithium-ion batteries accept charge more readily when they are lower, and they need to be charged more gently as they near full, because pushing them at full rate all the way to 100 percent would stress them and generate excess heat. By tapering the rate as the battery fills, the vehicle’s battery management system charges the battery safely and protects its health. Tapering is the car managing the charge intelligently.

The charging curve

Tapering gives EV charging its characteristic curve:

This is why the last portion of a charge takes proportionally longer than the earlier portion, the rate has tapered down.

Most noticeable on DC fast charging

Tapering is most dramatic during DC fast charging, where the rate starts very high and tapers significantly as the battery fills. This is why DC fast charging is fastest in the lower and middle range and much slower near full, and why fast-charging guidance often suggests charging the faster lower range rather than waiting for a full charge. On slower home (AC) charging, tapering still occurs but is less dramatic because the overall rate is lower to begin with.

What it means for home charging

For home charging, tapering usually does not matter in practice. Overnight charging provides plenty of time to complete the charge even as the rate tapers near full, so you simply wake up to a charged car. Tapering is more relevant when charging quickly on the road. At home, the main takeaway is that tapering is normal and expected, not a sign of a problem, and a convenient home charging setup makes it a non-issue, which a licensed electrician can install.

Tapering during EV charging is the gradual reduction in the charging rate as the battery fills, fastest when lower and slowing as it approaches full, which the vehicle does to protect the battery and charge it safely. It gives charging its characteristic curve and is most noticeable on DC fast charging. Tapering is normal and designed-in, not a fault, and for overnight home charging it usually does not matter since there is ample time.

Daniel came to install our EV charger and did a phenomenal job. He needed to get more wire for the installation which was not in the original quote and was very transparent in what he had to do. He stayed well after 6pm to complete the work and did a stellar job and explained everything. Overall, great experience and recommend without reservation.
Response from the owner: Good Afternoon,Thank you for your kind review. We do everything in our power to keep our clients satisfied. We appreciate you and your business. We will pass your praise on to Danny our sentiment is the same! Gratefully,Stella
I called Stella Electric about flickering lights in my home and spoke with Rich. He recommended contacting BGE first, explaining that the problem could be on the utility’s supply side. He even gave me a script to avoid any pushback from the utility company - turns out it wasn’t necessary, but it still was great to have in my back pocket. He was absolutely right, and his advice saved me the cost of having an electrician come out to diagnose it.I really appreciated him taking the time to help me over the phone and steering me toward the right solution. That kind of honesty and care builds trust and earns a loyal, long term customer. Stella Electric will be my first call the next time I need electrical work. Thank you, Rich and Stella Electric!
Response from the owner: Thank you for the kind review Ian! We hope to connect with you on a project in the future, and appreciate you.Gratefully,Stella
We needed to have a generator plug installed, and Daniel was our technician. He was very polite and professional, took the time to explain everything, and made sure we understood the work being done. Unlike those who rush through a job, Daniel made sure all our questions were answered. We will definitely be using Stella Electric again for our future electrical needs!
