What Is Short Circuit Current Rating (SCCR)?

Get A Fast Quote

Short circuit current rating (SCCR) is the maximum fault (short circuit) current that a piece of electrical equipment can safely withstand for a specified time without being damaged or creating a hazard, and the equipment’s SCCR must be at least as high as the available fault current at its location. SCCR is a critical safety specification, because equipment subjected to more fault current than it is rated for can fail destructively. Understanding SCCR helps explain why equipment must be matched to the system’s available fault current.

Here is what short circuit current rating (SCCR) is.

SCCR and available fault current are determined through engineering analysis, so matching equipment SCCR to a system is done by qualified engineers or electricians following the applicable code and standards.

What SCCR means

SCCR is a rating assigned to electrical equipment indicating the maximum short circuit (fault) current it can safely handle. A short circuit can deliver a very large surge of current, far beyond normal operation, and equipment must be able to withstand that current, until protective devices clear the fault, without rupturing, catching fire, or otherwise failing dangerously. The SCCR expresses that capability, for example an equipment SCCR rated in thousands of amps (kA).

Available fault current

The counterpart to SCCR is the available fault current, the maximum fault current that could actually flow at a given point in the electrical system if a short circuit occurred there. This depends on the system, including the utility supply and the equipment between it and that point. The available fault current is determined by analysis of the system. The key relationship is between this available current and the equipment’s SCCR.

The critical rule

The critical rule is that equipment’s SCCR must be at least as high as the available fault current at its location. If the available fault current exceeds the equipment’s SCCR, the equipment could fail destructively during a fault, a serious safety hazard. So equipment is selected with an SCCR that meets or exceeds the available fault current where it is installed. This matching is a fundamental safety requirement, not an optional consideration.

Why it matters

SCCR matters because a mismatch is dangerous. Equipment subjected to more fault current than it can withstand can rupture, arc, or catch fire during a short circuit, endangering people and property. Properly rated equipment, by contrast, safely contains the fault until protective devices clear it. Because fault currents can be very high, especially in commercial systems, ensuring adequate SCCR is essential for safety and is addressed in code. This is why SCCR is a key specification in equipment selection.

Determined by professionals

Because SCCR matching requires knowing the available fault current, which is determined by engineering analysis of the system, and selecting equipment accordingly, it is handled by qualified engineers or electricians. They calculate the available fault current, ensure equipment SCCR meets or exceeds it, and document the compliance. This is part of properly designing and installing a commercial electrical system, and it is not something to estimate casually given the safety stakes.

Short circuit current rating (SCCR) is the maximum fault current equipment can safely withstand without failing dangerously, and the critical rule is that equipment’s SCCR must be at least as high as the available fault current at its location. A mismatch, where available fault current exceeds the SCCR, can cause destructive equipment failure during a short circuit. Because it requires analysis of the system’s fault current, SCCR matching is handled by qualified professionals as a fundamental safety requirement.

Daniel came to install our EV charger and did a phenomenal job. He needed to get more wire for the installation which was not in the original quote and was very transparent in what he had to do. He stayed well after 6pm to complete the work and did a stellar job and explained everything. Overall, great experience and recommend without reservation.
Response from the owner: Good Afternoon,Thank you for your kind review. We do everything in our power to keep our clients satisfied. We appreciate you and your business. We will pass your praise on to Danny our sentiment is the same! Gratefully,Stella
I called Stella Electric about flickering lights in my home and spoke with Rich. He recommended contacting BGE first, explaining that the problem could be on the utility’s supply side. He even gave me a script to avoid any pushback from the utility company - turns out it wasn’t necessary, but it still was great to have in my back pocket. He was absolutely right, and his advice saved me the cost of having an electrician come out to diagnose it.I really appreciated him taking the time to help me over the phone and steering me toward the right solution. That kind of honesty and care builds trust and earns a loyal, long term customer. Stella Electric will be my first call the next time I need electrical work. Thank you, Rich and Stella Electric!
Response from the owner: Thank you for the kind review Ian! We hope to connect with you on a project in the future, and appreciate you.Gratefully,Stella
We needed to have a generator plug installed, and Daniel was our technician. He was very polite and professional, took the time to explain everything, and made sure we understood the work being done. Unlike those who rush through a job, Daniel made sure all our questions were answered. We will definitely be using Stella Electric again for our future electrical needs!
Response from the owner: Thank you for your review Alex! We appreciate you considering us for this project and hope to connect with you on future ones!Gratefully,Stella
