What Is Electrical Rough-In During Construction?

Get A Fast Quote

Electrical rough-in is the stage of a construction or remodeling project where the bones of the electrical system go into the walls, after the framing is up but before insulation and drywall close everything in. During rough-in, the wiring and boxes are installed, but nothing is finished yet. It is one of the most important phases of any electrical project, because it is the last chance to get the wiring right while everything is still accessible.

Here is what electrical rough-in involves and why it matters.

What happens during rough-in

Rough-in covers the work that has to be done before the walls are closed:

What does not happen during rough-in is the finishing. Outlets and switches are not installed yet, fixtures are not hung, and the wires are left safely capped inside the boxes. That comes later.

The rough-in inspection

Once the rough wiring is complete, a rough-in inspection takes place before insulation and drywall go up. The inspector verifies that the work meets code while it can still be seen, checking things like proper box fill, secure cable support, correct grounding, and that circuits are wired correctly.

This inspection is a critical milestone. You should not cover the wiring with insulation or drywall until it has passed, because covered work that fails may have to be reopened, which is costly and time-consuming.

What comes after rough-in

After the rough-in passes and the walls are finished, the project moves to the finish or trim-out stage. This is when the electrician:

The final inspection then confirms the completed system is safe and code-compliant.

Why rough-in matters so much

Rough-in is the stage where decisions get locked in. While the walls are open, it is easy and inexpensive to add an outlet, place a switch where you want it, or run a dedicated circuit for a future appliance. Once the drywall is up, changes become far more involved. That is why planning your outlet, switch, and fixture locations, and thinking ahead about circuits you may need, pays off most during rough-in.

A good electrician will walk through the plan with you at this stage, confirming locations and asking about future needs like an EV charger, a home office, or added lighting, so the finished home works the way you want.

Electrical rough-in is the phase of construction where wiring and boxes are installed after framing but before drywall, followed by a rough-in inspection that must pass before the walls are closed. It is the ideal time to finalize outlet and switch locations and add any circuits you may need, since changes are easy now and difficult later. After rough-in and finishing, the trim-out stage installs the devices and fixtures, and a final inspection confirms the system is safe.
