What Is Derating in an Electrical Panel?

Get A Fast Quote

Derating means reducing the effective capacity of an electrical conductor or device below its baseline rating to account for conditions that affect how much current it can safely carry. Factors like high temperatures and bundling many wires together reduce a wire’s safe capacity, so electricians derate to keep everything within safe limits. Derating also refers to intentionally reducing a main breaker’s size to create headroom. Understanding it explains some of the sizing decisions in an electrical system.

Here is what derating in an electrical panel means.

Conductor derating

The most common meaning of derating applies to conductors, the wires that carry current. A wire has a baseline ampacity, the amount of current it can safely carry, but certain conditions require that capacity to be reduced, or derated, for safety:

Electricians apply these derating factors when sizing wire, which is why the same gauge of wire can be rated for different amounts of current depending on the conditions.

Why derating matters

Derating exists to prevent overheating. A wire that carries more current than it can safely handle under its actual conditions will overheat, which degrades insulation and creates a fire risk. By derating for heat, bundling, and terminations, an electrician ensures the wire stays within safe limits in the real-world conditions it operates in. This is why proper wire sizing is more involved than simply matching a gauge to an amperage.

Derating the main breaker

Derating also refers to intentionally installing a smaller main breaker than the panel’s maximum. This comes up most often when adding solar or a battery, where reducing the main breaker, for example from 200 to 175 amps, creates headroom under the 120 percent rule so the added source can connect without a full panel upgrade. Derating the main breaker is only done when a load calculation confirms the home’s demand can be served by the smaller main.

How this affects your wiring

For most homeowners, derating happens behind the scenes as part of proper electrical work. When an electrician sizes the wire for a new circuit, such as an EV charger, they account for the wiring method, the run length, temperature, and any bundling, which can affect the required wire size. This is part of why the correct wire gauge depends on the specific conditions, not just the amperage.

Why a professional handles it

Applying derating correctly requires knowing the code’s adjustment and correction factors and how they apply to the specific installation. Getting it wrong can leave a wire undersized for its conditions, which is a fire hazard. This is one of the reasons circuit and wire sizing should be done by a licensed electrician, who accounts for all the factors that affect safe capacity.

Derating in an electrical system means reducing the effective capacity of a conductor or device to account for conditions like high temperatures, bundling of conductors, and termination ratings, which is done to prevent overheating. It can also mean intentionally installing a smaller main breaker to create headroom, as when adding solar or a battery. Because proper derating requires applying code factors to the specific conditions, it is handled by a licensed electrician as part of safe wire and circuit sizing.

Daniel came to install our EV charger and did a phenomenal job. He needed to get more wire for the installation which was not in the original quote and was very transparent in what he had to do. He stayed well after 6pm to complete the work and did a stellar job and explained everything. Overall, great experience and recommend without reservation.
Response from the owner: Good Afternoon,Thank you for your kind review. We do everything in our power to keep our clients satisfied. We appreciate you and your business. We will pass your praise on to Danny our sentiment is the same! Gratefully,Stella
I called Stella Electric about flickering lights in my home and spoke with Rich. He recommended contacting BGE first, explaining that the problem could be on the utility’s supply side. He even gave me a script to avoid any pushback from the utility company - turns out it wasn’t necessary, but it still was great to have in my back pocket. He was absolutely right, and his advice saved me the cost of having an electrician come out to diagnose it.I really appreciated him taking the time to help me over the phone and steering me toward the right solution. That kind of honesty and care builds trust and earns a loyal, long term customer. Stella Electric will be my first call the next time I need electrical work. Thank you, Rich and Stella Electric!
Response from the owner: Thank you for the kind review Ian! We hope to connect with you on a project in the future, and appreciate you.Gratefully,Stella
We needed to have a generator plug installed, and Daniel was our technician. He was very polite and professional, took the time to explain everything, and made sure we understood the work being done. Unlike those who rush through a job, Daniel made sure all our questions were answered. We will definitely be using Stella Electric again for our future electrical needs!
Response from the owner: Thank you for your review Alex! We appreciate you considering us for this project and hope to connect with you on future ones!Gratefully,Stella
