- While-in-use covers, also called in-use or bubble covers. These have a larger, often clear, hinged cover that closes over the outlet even while a cord is plugged in. The bubble shape leaves room for the plug, so the outlet stays protected during use, not just when idle.
The while-in-use cover is the one most people picture for a properly protected outdoor outlet, because it keeps the receptacle covered whether or not something is plugged in.
What the code requires
The National Electrical Code addresses outlets in damp and wet locations, primarily in Article 406.9. In simple terms:
- Wet locations generally require a while-in-use cover for common 15 and 20 amp, 125 and 250 volt receptacles, so the outlet stays weatherproof whether or not a plug is inserted.
- Damp locations require at least a cover that keeps the outlet protected when nothing is plugged in.
- Outdoor receptacles in these locations must also be the weather-resistant (WR) type, which are built to handle moisture and temperature swings.
On top of the cover requirements, outdoor outlets must have GFCI protection, which guards against shock in wet conditions. The cover and the GFCI work together to keep an outdoor outlet safe.
Where you need weatherproof covers
Weatherproof covers belong anywhere an outlet is exposed to moisture, including:
- Exterior walls of the home
- Patios, decks, and porches
- Pool and hot tub areas
- Garages near doors and other openings
- Sheds and other outbuildings

Materials and features
Weatherproof covers come in metal or durable plastic such as polycarbonate, and outdoor versions are typically UV-resistant so they do not become brittle in the sun. Some include lockable options for added security. A good cover has a proper gasket to seal against the wall and enough depth to close over the cords you plan to use.
Keeping outdoor outlets safe
To get the most protection:
- Make sure outdoor outlets are the weather-resistant type with the correct cover for the location.
- Keep covers closed when the outlet is not in use.
- Confirm outdoor outlets have GFCI protection and test them periodically.
- Have damaged covers or outlets replaced promptly.
