What Is a Tamper-Resistant Outlet?

Get A Fast Quote

If you have looked closely at a newer outlet, you may have noticed the letters “TR” stamped on its face. That marking means it is a tamper-resistant outlet, a safety device designed to keep children from being injured by wall receptacles. These outlets look almost identical to standard ones, but they work differently in a way that can prevent serious harm.

Here is what a tamper-resistant outlet is, how it works, and why it has become a standard part of modern homes.

How a tamper-resistant outlet works

A tamper-resistant outlet has built-in, spring-loaded shutters behind the slots where a plug goes in. The shutters stay closed until equal pressure is applied to both slots at the same time, which is exactly what happens when you insert the two blades of a plug together.

If a child pushes a single object into just one slot, such as a hairpin, key, or paperclip, the shutter stays closed and blocks access to the live contacts. It is a simple mechanical safeguard, but it addresses one of the most common ways young children are injured by electricity.

Why they matter for safety

Curious toddlers explore with their hands, and standard outlets sit right at their eye level. Inserting an object into an energized outlet can cause burns and shocks. Tamper-resistant outlets are engineered specifically to reduce these injuries by making it far harder to reach the live contacts with a single item.

Because the protection is built into the outlet itself, it is always working. There is nothing to remember to put back and nothing to lose.

Tamper-resistant outlets vs plastic outlet caps

Many parents rely on the small plastic caps that plug into outlets. They help, but they have real drawbacks. Caps can be pulled out by a determined child, they are easy to lose, and a removed cap can itself become a choking hazard. They also tend to be left out once an outlet is in use.

A tamper-resistant outlet solves those problems by building the protection into the receptacle permanently. It is widely considered the more reliable, long-term solution.

What the electrical code requires

Tamper-resistant receptacles are not just a good idea; they are required by the National Electrical Code (NEC). Under NEC 406.12, tamper-resistant receptacles are required in dwelling units for the common 15 and 20 amp, 125 volt receptacles, with the requirement expanded across code editions to additional receptacles and locations. This requirement was broadly introduced for dwellings in the 2008 edition of the code.

In practice, that means new construction and most remodels must use tamper-resistant outlets. Requirements can vary by jurisdiction and code cycle, so a licensed electrician can confirm what applies to your project.

Do you need to upgrade your existing outlets?

If your home was built or updated before tamper-resistant outlets were required, your existing outlets may not have them. You are generally not forced to retrofit an older home simply because the code changed, but upgrading is a smart, low-cost safety improvement, especially in homes with young children.

A few good times to make the switch:

Because the upgrade is affordable and the outlets install in place of standard ones, it is an easy win for household safety.

How to spot a tamper-resistant outlet

The easiest way to identify one is the “TR” marking on the face of the outlet, usually between or near the slots. From a distance, a tamper-resistant outlet looks just like a regular one. The only difference you may notice in daily use is that a plug can require slightly firmer, even pressure to insert, since both shutters have to open together.

Daniel came to install our EV charger and did a phenomenal job. He needed to get more wire for the installation which was not in the original quote and was very transparent in what he had to do. He stayed well after 6pm to complete the work and did a stellar job and explained everything. Overall, great experience and recommend without reservation.

I called Stella Electric about flickering lights in my home and spoke with Rich. He recommended contacting BGE first, explaining that the problem could be on the utility’s supply side. He even gave me a script to avoid any pushback from the utility company - turns out it wasn’t necessary, but it still was great to have in my back pocket. He was absolutely right, and his advice saved me the cost of having an electrician come out to diagnose it.I really appreciated him taking the time to help me over the phone and steering me toward the right solution. That kind of honesty and care builds trust and earns a loyal, long term customer. Stella Electric will be my first call the next time I need electrical work. Thank you, Rich and Stella Electric!
