What Is a Single Pole vs Double Pole Breaker?

Get A Fast Quote

Single-pole and double-pole breakers are the two most common types of breakers in a home panel, and the difference comes down to voltage and what they power. A single-pole breaker delivers 120 volts for everyday circuits, while a double-pole breaker delivers 240 volts for large appliances. Understanding the difference helps you make sense of your panel and what each breaker does.

Here is what separates a single-pole from a double-pole breaker.

The single-pole breaker

A single-pole breaker occupies one slot in your panel and connects to one hot bus bar, delivering 120 volts. It uses one hot conductor and a neutral, and it is typically rated at 15 or 20 amps. Single-pole breakers handle the majority of a home’s circuits, including general lighting, outlets, and most standard receptacles.

If you look at your panel, most of the breakers are single-pole, each with its own switch handle in a single slot.

The double-pole breaker

A double-pole breaker occupies two slots and connects to both hot bus bars. Because the two bus bars are on opposite legs of the incoming power, connecting to both delivers 240 volts. A double-pole breaker uses two hot conductors, and it is rated at higher amperages, commonly 30, 40, 50, or 60 amps.

Double-pole breakers power the home’s large, high-demand equipment, such as:

A double-pole breaker has a wider body spanning two slots, usually with the two switch handles tied together so they trip as one.

The key differences

Feature Single-pole Double-pole
Slots used One Two
Voltage 120V 240V
Hot conductors One Two
Typical amperage 15 or 20 amps 30 to 60 amps
Common uses Lights, outlets, general circuits Ranges, dryers, AC, EV chargers

Why 240 volts needs a double-pole breaker

Your home’s electrical service provides two 120-volt legs. A single-pole breaker taps one leg for 120 volts, while a double-pole breaker taps both legs, and because the two legs are out of phase with each other, the voltage between them is 240 volts. That is why high-demand appliances that need 240 volts require a double-pole breaker, it is the only way to access the higher voltage.

Choosing and installing the right breaker

The right breaker depends on the circuit and the equipment it serves, and it must match the wire size and load. Using the wrong breaker, such as one rated too high for the wire, removes the protection the breaker is meant to provide. This is why breaker selection and installation should be done by a licensed electrician, who matches the breaker, wire, and load correctly.

A single-pole breaker uses one slot and delivers 120 volts for general circuits like lights and outlets, while a double-pole breaker uses two slots and delivers 240 volts for large appliances like ranges, dryers, air conditioning, and EV chargers. The difference comes from tapping one versus both hot legs of your service. Matching the correct breaker to the circuit and load is a job for a licensed electrician.

Daniel came to install our EV charger and did a phenomenal job. He needed to get more wire for the installation which was not in the original quote and was very transparent in what he had to do. He stayed well after 6pm to complete the work and did a stellar job and explained everything. Overall, great experience and recommend without reservation.
Response from the owner: Good Afternoon,Thank you for your kind review. We do everything in our power to keep our clients satisfied. We appreciate you and your business. We will pass your praise on to Danny our sentiment is the same! Gratefully,Stella
I called Stella Electric about flickering lights in my home and spoke with Rich. He recommended contacting BGE first, explaining that the problem could be on the utility’s supply side. He even gave me a script to avoid any pushback from the utility company - turns out it wasn’t necessary, but it still was great to have in my back pocket. He was absolutely right, and his advice saved me the cost of having an electrician come out to diagnose it.I really appreciated him taking the time to help me over the phone and steering me toward the right solution. That kind of honesty and care builds trust and earns a loyal, long term customer. Stella Electric will be my first call the next time I need electrical work. Thank you, Rich and Stella Electric!
