What Is a Main Breaker vs a Main Lug Panel?

Get A Fast Quote

When shopping for or discussing an electrical panel, you will run into two basic types: main breaker panels and main lug panels. They look similar, but they differ in one important way, whether the panel has a built-in main disconnect. That difference determines where each type is used and what protection it needs.

Here is what separates a main breaker panel from a main lug panel.

What a main breaker panel is

A main breaker panel has a single large breaker, the main breaker, that controls power to the entire panel. Flipping it off cuts power to all the circuits at once, which makes it both a disconnect and overcurrent protection for the panel. The main breaker’s rating, such as 100 or 200 amps, also sets the service size.

This is the type most people picture as their home’s main panel, and it is what you typically find serving a house.

What a main lug panel is

A main lug panel, often called a main lug only or MLO panel, has no main breaker. Instead, the incoming wires connect directly to lugs on the bus, and the panel relies on an upstream overcurrent device for protection. In other words, something ahead of it, such as the main breaker in another panel, provides the disconnect and protection.

Because it has no main disconnect of its own, a main lug panel is commonly used as a subpanel fed from a main panel, or in setups where a separate service disconnect is located upstream.

The key differences

Feature Main breaker panel Main lug panel
Built-in main disconnect Yes No
Overcurrent protection Provided by its own main breaker Provided by an upstream device
Common use Main service panel Subpanel or with upstream disconnect
Shut off all power At the panel’s main breaker At the upstream breaker

Why the difference matters

The distinction is about safety and code compliance. A main lug panel is only safe when the upstream device properly protects it at its rated capacity. Using a main lug panel without adequate upstream protection would leave the busbar unprotected. This is why main lug panels are typically installed as subpanels, where the feeder breaker in the main panel provides that protection.

It also matters for shutting off power. With a main breaker panel, you can cut all power at that panel. With a main lug subpanel, you shut it down at the upstream breaker that feeds it.

Which one does your home need?

For most homes, the main service panel is a main breaker panel, since it needs a main disconnect and its own protection. When you are adding capacity with a subpanel, a main lug panel is often the right choice, protected by the feeder breaker in the main panel. The correct configuration depends on your setup, and there are code requirements around service disconnects that an electrician will follow.

If you are unsure what you have or what you need, an electrician can identify your panels and recommend the right type for any additions.

A main breaker panel has a built-in main breaker that disconnects and protects the whole panel, making it the standard choice for a home’s main service. A main lug panel has no main breaker and relies on an upstream device for protection, which is why it is typically used as a subpanel. Choosing correctly is a matter of safety and code, so it is best decided with a licensed electrician.
