What Fails a Home Electrical Inspection?

Get A Fast Quote

Whether you are buying or selling a home, updating your insurance, or simply checking that your house is safe, an electrical inspection can surface problems you did not know existed. Knowing what commonly fails helps you prepare, budget for repairs, and avoid last-minute surprises that can delay a closing.

Here are the issues that most often fail a home electrical inspection, grouped by where they show up, and what to do about them.

Note: a home inspector documents concerns and recommends a licensed electrician, while an electrical safety inspection evaluates the system against code. Requirements can vary by jurisdiction and code cycle, so confirm specifics locally.

Electrical panel problems

The panel is the heart of your electrical system, so problems here are among the most serious red flags.

Wiring problems

Older or improperly modified wiring is a frequent cause of failure.

Outlet, GFCI, and AFCI problems

Inspectors test outlets throughout the home, and these issues come up often.

Safety devices and other common issues

Quick reference: common failures

Category Common failures
Panel FPE or Zinsco panels, double-taps, over-fusing, no labeling, overheating
Wiring Knob-and-tube, aluminum branch wiring, poor grounding, open splices
Outlets Missing GFCI or AFCI, ungrounded outlets, reversed polarity
Safety devices Missing or outdated smoke and CO alarms
Other Unpermitted DIY work, missing weatherproof covers

What happens if your home fails

A failed inspection is not the end of the road. The inspector documents each issue, and a licensed electrician corrects the problems, often followed by a re-inspection to confirm the repairs. Many of these items are straightforward fixes, such as adding GFCI protection, correcting a double-tap, or replacing a hazardous panel. Addressing them promptly keeps a sale on track and reassures insurers.

How to prepare before inspection day

If you want to get ahead of problems, a pre-listing or pre-purchase electrical inspection is worth considering. It identifies the issues in advance so you can budget and make repairs on your own timeline rather than under the pressure of a closing deadline. Simple steps like labeling your panel, testing GFCIs and alarms, and having any known concerns evaluated go a long way.

Daniel came to install our EV charger and did a phenomenal job. He needed to get more wire for the installation which was not in the original quote and was very transparent in what he had to do. He stayed well after 6pm to complete the work and did a stellar job and explained everything. Overall, great experience and recommend without reservation.
Response from the owner: Good Afternoon,Thank you for your kind review. We do everything in our power to keep our clients satisfied. We appreciate you and your business. We will pass your praise on to Danny our sentiment is the same! Gratefully,Stella
I called Stella Electric about flickering lights in my home and spoke with Rich. He recommended contacting BGE first, explaining that the problem could be on the utility’s supply side. He even gave me a script to avoid any pushback from the utility company - turns out it wasn’t necessary, but it still was great to have in my back pocket. He was absolutely right, and his advice saved me the cost of having an electrician come out to diagnose it.I really appreciated him taking the time to help me over the phone and steering me toward the right solution. That kind of honesty and care builds trust and earns a loyal, long term customer. Stella Electric will be my first call the next time I need electrical work. Thank you, Rich and Stella Electric!
