What Causes an Outlet to Stop Working but the Breaker Is Fine?

Get A Fast Quote

It is a common and puzzling situation: an outlet suddenly stops working, but when you check the breaker panel, nothing is tripped. The good news is that there are a handful of common causes, and some are simple to resolve. The most frequent culprit is a tripped GFCI somewhere else on the circuit, followed by loose or failed connections. Knowing what to check helps you narrow it down.

Here is what causes an outlet to stop working when the breaker is fine.

A tripped GFCI upstream

This is the most common and easily overlooked cause. A GFCI outlet protects not only itself but often other standard outlets downstream on the same circuit. If a GFCI somewhere on the circuit has tripped, the outlets it protects will lose power, even though no breaker is tripped.

Check GFCI outlets in nearby kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoors, and press reset on any that have tripped. This often restores power to a dead outlet.

A loose or failed connection

If no GFCI is the cause, a loose or failed connection is a frequent reason an outlet goes dead:

These connection problems stop the flow of power and can also create heat, so they are a safety concern as well as an inconvenience.

A worn-out or failed outlet

Outlets wear out. An old or damaged outlet can simply fail internally, losing power even though the wiring to it is fine. Signs of a failing outlet include one that is loose, discolored, warm, or no longer holds a plug. A failed outlet needs to be replaced.

A switched outlet

Some outlets, or half of an outlet, are controlled by a wall switch. If an outlet suddenly seems dead, check whether a nearby switch controls it and whether that switch is off. This is a simple explanation that is easy to miss.

Other wiring issues

Less common causes include an open neutral or other wiring fault on the circuit, which can interrupt power without tripping the breaker. These are harder to diagnose and point to a wiring problem that an electrician should investigate.

What to check and when to call an electrician

A reasonable order to check:

  1. Look for a tripped GFCI on the circuit and press reset.
  2. Check whether a wall switch controls the outlet.
  3. Note any signs of a failing outlet, like warmth, discoloration, or looseness.

If resetting GFCIs and checking switches does not solve it, or if you notice warmth, a burning smell, or buzzing, call a licensed electrician. Loose or failed connections and wiring faults are a safety concern and should be diagnosed and repaired professionally. A burning smell, smoke, or sparks is an emergency.

When an outlet stops working but the breaker is fine, the most common cause is a tripped GFCI elsewhere on the circuit, followed by loose or failed connections, a worn-out outlet, or a switched outlet. Start by resetting GFCIs and checking any controlling switch. If that does not solve it, or if there are signs of heat or arcing, a licensed electrician should diagnose the connection or wiring problem, since these are safety concerns.

I called Stella Electric about flickering lights in my home and spoke with Rich. He recommended contacting BGE first, explaining that the problem could be on the utility’s supply side. He even gave me a script to avoid any pushback from the utility company - turns out it wasn’t necessary, but it still was great to have in my back pocket. He was absolutely right, and his advice saved me the cost of having an electrician come out to diagnose it.I really appreciated him taking the time to help me over the phone and steering me toward the right solution. That kind of honesty and care builds trust and earns a loyal, long term customer. Stella Electric will be my first call the next time I need electrical work. Thank you, Rich and Stella Electric!
