Tesla Wall Connector Electrical Requirements Explained

Get A Fast Quote

The Tesla Wall Connector is a hardwired Level 2 charger that delivers up to 48 amps, or 11.5 kW, of charging power. That makes it one of the faster home chargers available, but reaching its full output depends on your home having the right circuit behind it. Knowing the electrical requirements up front helps you plan the install and avoid surprises.

Here is what the Tesla Wall Connector needs, based on Tesla’s published specifications.

Always follow the current Tesla installation manual and your local code. The details below are typical and may vary by model and revision

Unlike a plug-in charger that uses a NEMA outlet, the Tesla Wall Connector is wired directly to a dedicated circuit. Hardwiring is what allows it to charge at up to 48 amps, since plug-in outlets are limited to 40 amps of continuous charging. It runs on nominal 200 to 240-volt single-phase power, which is standard residential 240-volt service.

Breaker size determines charging speed

The Wall Connector uses automatic load management, so it can be configured for different circuit sizes during setup. The breaker you install sets the maximum charging output, because the charger draws up to 80 percent of the breaker rating:

Circuit breaker Max output Power at 240V
60 amps 48 amps 11.5 kW
50 amps 40 amps 9.6 kW
40 amps 32 amps 7.6 kW
30 amps 24 amps 5.7 kW
20 amps 16 amps 3.8 kW
15 amps 12 amps 2.8 kW

For maximum 48-amp charging, you need a double-pole 60-amp breaker. If your panel cannot support a 60-amp circuit, the Wall Connector can be set to a lower amperage and still charge, just at a reduced rate. The breaker size is programmed during commissioning.

Wire gauge

A 60-amp circuit for full 48-amp charging typically uses 6 AWG copper wire for runs up to roughly 50 feet. For longer distances, such as a basement panel feeding a detached garage, an electrician may step up to 4 AWG copper to limit voltage drop. The Wall Connector uses three conductors, two hots and a ground, and does not require a neutral. Copper is the standard choice, and a voltage drop calculation should be part of any longer run.

GFCI and disconnect

The Tesla Wall Connector includes integrated ground-fault protection, so it does not require a separate GFCI breaker. Tesla also notes that an external disconnect switch is neither required nor recommended for typical installations. This simplifies the install compared with some plug-in setups.

Panel capacity matters

A 60-amp circuit is a meaningful addition to your electrical system. Homes with 200-amp service can usually accommodate it without trouble. If your panel is smaller, older, or already full, you have options: an electrician can evaluate whether a panel or service upgrade is needed, or use load management so the charger backs off when the rest of the home is drawing heavily. Load management can sometimes avoid the cost of a full service upgrade.

Connectivity and connector

The Wall Connector includes Wi-Fi for setup, updates, and monitoring, and it uses the NACS connector found on Tesla vehicles. Non-Tesla EVs that support NACS, or that use an adapter, can charge from it as well. The attached cable is around 24 feet, which gives good reach in most garages.

Permit and professional installation

In Maryland, installing a hardwired 240-volt charger circuit generally requires a permit and inspection. A licensed electrician performs the load calculation, installs the correct breaker and wire, connects the unit, configures the circuit size, and ensures the work passes inspection. This protects your home, your warranty, and your safety.

The Tesla Wall Connector is a hardwired Level 2 charger that needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit. For its full 48-amp, 11.5 kW output, that means a 60-amp double-pole breaker with 6 AWG copper wire, upsized for long runs, using two hots and a ground. It has built-in GFCI protection, needs no external disconnect, and can be configured for smaller circuits if your panel requires it. Because it ties into your panel and requires a permit, professional installation is the way to go.

Stella Electric installs the Tesla Wall Connector and other Level 2 chargers for homeowners across the Baltimore area and throughout Maryland, with flat-rate pricing and no overtime charges. We size the circuit, handle the permit, and configure the unit for your home. Financing is available on qualifying projects.

Daniel came to install our EV charger and did a phenomenal job. He needed to get more wire for the installation which was not in the original quote and was very transparent in what he had to do. He stayed well after 6pm to complete the work and did a stellar job and explained everything. Overall, great experience and recommend without reservation.
Response from the owner: Good Afternoon,Thank you for your kind review. We do everything in our power to keep our clients satisfied. We appreciate you and your business. We will pass your praise on to Danny our sentiment is the same! Gratefully,Stella
I called Stella Electric about flickering lights in my home and spoke with Rich. He recommended contacting BGE first, explaining that the problem could be on the utility’s supply side. He even gave me a script to avoid any pushback from the utility company - turns out it wasn’t necessary, but it still was great to have in my back pocket. He was absolutely right, and his advice saved me the cost of having an electrician come out to diagnose it.I really appreciated him taking the time to help me over the phone and steering me toward the right solution. That kind of honesty and care builds trust and earns a loyal, long term customer. Stella Electric will be my first call the next time I need electrical work. Thank you, Rich and Stella Electric!
Response from the owner: Thank you for the kind review Ian! We hope to connect with you on a project in the future, and appreciate you.Gratefully,Stella
We needed to have a generator plug installed, and Daniel was our technician. He was very polite and professional, took the time to explain everything, and made sure we understood the work being done. Unlike those who rush through a job, Daniel made sure all our questions were answered. We will definitely be using Stella Electric again for our future electrical needs!
Response from the owner: Thank you for your review Alex! We appreciate you considering us for this project and hope to connect with you on future ones!Gratefully,Stella
