NEMA 14-50 vs 6-50 Outlet for EV Charging: Which to Use

Get A Fast Quote

If you are setting up a plug-in Level 2 charger at home, two 240-volt outlets come up again and again: the NEMA 14-50 and the NEMA 6-50. Both can charge an electric vehicle, both run on a 50-amp circuit, and both are common choices. The difference comes down to how they are wired, what else you might use them for, and installation cost.

Here is a clear comparison of the NEMA 14-50 vs 6-50 outlet for EV charging.

What each outlet is

A NEMA 14-50 is a four-prong, 240-volt, 50-amp receptacle. It carries two hot conductors, a neutral, and a ground. Because it includes a neutral, it can supply both 240-volt and 120-volt loads. You will find 14-50 outlets at RV sites and behind many electric ranges.

A NEMA 6-50 is a three-prong, 240-volt, 50-amp receptacle. It carries two hot conductors and a ground, with no neutral. It supplies 240 volts only. Welders commonly use 6-50 outlets.

The key difference for EV charging

Here is the part that matters most: EV charging only needs 240 volts, which means two hots and a ground. It does not use a neutral. So from a pure charging standpoint, a 6-50 provides everything your charger needs, and the neutral in a 14-50 typically goes unused by the charging equipment.

That leads to a practical trade-off. A 6-50 uses one fewer conductor, so the wiring can be a little less expensive to install. A 14-50 costs a bit more to wire because of the extra neutral conductor, but it is more versatile.

Why many people still choose the 14-50

The 14-50 is the more universal outlet, and that flexibility is why it is so popular:

If you want one outlet that does more than charge a car, the 14-50 is usually the pick.

When a 6-50 makes sense

A 6-50 is a good choice when:

There is nothing wrong with a 6-50 for EV charging. It simply does not offer the extra 120-volt capability of a 14-50.

Best for Flexibility and future uses EV-only, lower wiring cost

The circuit and safety details

Whichever outlet you choose, a few points apply to both:

Because these are high-amperage 240-volt circuits, installation should be done by a licensed electrician who will size the wire, add the correct breaker and GFCI protection, and pull the permit.

Daniel came to install our EV charger and did a phenomenal job. He needed to get more wire for the installation which was not in the original quote and was very transparent in what he had to do. He stayed well after 6pm to complete the work and did a stellar job and explained everything. Overall, great experience and recommend without reservation.

I called Stella Electric about flickering lights in my home and spoke with Rich. He recommended contacting BGE first, explaining that the problem could be on the utility’s supply side. He even gave me a script to avoid any pushback from the utility company - turns out it wasn’t necessary, but it still was great to have in my back pocket. He was absolutely right, and his advice saved me the cost of having an electrician come out to diagnose it.I really appreciated him taking the time to help me over the phone and steering me toward the right solution. That kind of honesty and care builds trust and earns a loyal, long term customer. Stella Electric will be my first call the next time I need electrical work. Thank you, Rich and Stella Electric!

We needed to have a generator plug installed, and Daniel was our technician. He was very polite and professional, took the time to explain everything, and made sure we understood the work being done. Unlike those who rush through a job, Daniel made sure all our questions were answered. We will definitely be using Stella Electric again for our future electrical needs!
