How to Prepare Your Home for a Rewire

Get A Fast Quote

Rewiring is one of the more disruptive home projects, since electricians need access to walls, ceilings, outlets, and your panel throughout the house. A little preparation makes the work go faster, protects your belongings, and reduces stress for everyone. The better your home is set up before the crew arrives, the smoother the project tends to be.

Here is how to prepare your home for a rewire.

Clear access to work areas

Electricians need to reach the places where wiring runs and where outlets, switches, and fixtures are located. Before the work begins:

The more accessible these areas are, the less time the crew spends moving things and the more they spend on the actual work.

Protect your belongings

Rewiring can create dust and debris, especially where walls are opened to run cable. To protect your home:

Your electrician will take care to minimize mess, but a little protection on your end goes a long way.

Plan for power interruptions

Rewiring means the power will be off in parts of the home, sometimes the whole house, at various points. Plan ahead by:

Knowing the schedule lets you avoid surprises and keep daily life running.

Think about people and pets

A rewire brings workers, tools, and open access throughout the home. For safety and comfort:

Talk through scope and timeline

Before work starts, have a clear conversation with your electrician about:

Clear expectations up front prevent misunderstandings later and help you plan around the work.

Understand the wall repair plan

Rewiring often requires opening sections of drywall or plaster to run cable and place boxes. Discuss ahead of time who handles patching and finishing. Some homeowners have the electrician coordinate repairs, while others handle painting and finishing themselves. Knowing this in advance avoids surprises when the electrical work is done.

Preparing for a rewire is mostly about access, protection, and planning. Clear furniture and access routes, protect your belongings from dust, plan around power outages, keep pets and kids safe, and align with your electrician on scope, timeline, and wall repairs. A well-prepared home lets the crew work efficiently and helps the project finish on schedule with less disruption.

Daniel came to install our EV charger and did a phenomenal job. He needed to get more wire for the installation which was not in the original quote and was very transparent in what he had to do. He stayed well after 6pm to complete the work and did a stellar job and explained everything. Overall, great experience and recommend without reservation.
Response from the owner: Good Afternoon,Thank you for your kind review. We do everything in our power to keep our clients satisfied. We appreciate you and your business. We will pass your praise on to Danny our sentiment is the same! Gratefully,Stella
I called Stella Electric about flickering lights in my home and spoke with Rich. He recommended contacting BGE first, explaining that the problem could be on the utility’s supply side. He even gave me a script to avoid any pushback from the utility company - turns out it wasn’t necessary, but it still was great to have in my back pocket. He was absolutely right, and his advice saved me the cost of having an electrician come out to diagnose it.I really appreciated him taking the time to help me over the phone and steering me toward the right solution. That kind of honesty and care builds trust and earns a loyal, long term customer. Stella Electric will be my first call the next time I need electrical work. Thank you, Rich and Stella Electric!
Response from the owner: Thank you for the kind review Ian! We hope to connect with you on a project in the future, and appreciate you.Gratefully,Stella
We needed to have a generator plug installed, and Daniel was our technician. He was very polite and professional, took the time to explain everything, and made sure we understood the work being done. Unlike those who rush through a job, Daniel made sure all our questions were answered. We will definitely be using Stella Electric again for our future electrical needs!
