How Often Should Breakers Be Tested?

Get A Fast Quote

Circuit breakers are a quiet but critical safety device, sitting in your panel ready to cut power the moment a circuit is overloaded or faults. Because they only act when needed, it is easy to assume they are always working. Testing helps confirm they are, and different types of breakers have different testing needs. Knowing how often to test them keeps this important protection reliable.

Here is how often breakers should be tested.

GFCI and AFCI devices: test monthly

The breakers and outlets most homeowners can and should test regularly are the ground-fault (GFCI) and arc-fault (AFCI) devices. These have test and reset buttons for exactly this purpose:

If a GFCI or AFCI device does not trip when tested, will not reset, or trips repeatedly, it should be checked by an electrician, since it may be faulty or responding to a real fault.

Standard breakers: professional testing

Standard circuit breakers do not have a test button for homeowners to use, and testing them properly is a job for a professional. Rather than a strict homeowner schedule, standard breakers are best evaluated as part of a periodic professional electrical inspection, which can include checking the panel, connections, and breaker condition.

How often to have this done depends on your home. Older homes and homes with a history of electrical issues benefit from more frequent professional attention, while newer homes in good condition can go longer between check-ups.

Signs a breaker may be failing

Regardless of a schedule, certain signs mean a breaker should be checked right away:

These can indicate a failing breaker or a circuit problem, and a burning smell, smoke, or sparks from the panel is an emergency.

Why testing matters

A breaker’s whole job is to protect your home by cutting power during an overload or fault. A breaker that fails to trip cannot do that, which is exactly the concern with obsolete panels like Federal Pacific and Zinsco. Testing GFCI and AFCI devices regularly, and having your panel and breakers evaluated periodically by a professional, ensures this protection is actually there when you need it.

Test your GFCI and AFCI devices about once a month using their test buttons, and have your standard breakers and panel evaluated as part of a periodic professional inspection, more often for older homes. Beyond any schedule, check a breaker right away if it trips frequently, feels warm, fails to trip, or shows signs of heat. Regular testing keeps this critical protection reliable.

I called Stella Electric about flickering lights in my home and spoke with Rich. He recommended contacting BGE first, explaining that the problem could be on the utility’s supply side. He even gave me a script to avoid any pushback from the utility company - turns out it wasn’t necessary, but it still was great to have in my back pocket. He was absolutely right, and his advice saved me the cost of having an electrician come out to diagnose it.I really appreciated him taking the time to help me over the phone and steering me toward the right solution. That kind of honesty and care builds trust and earns a loyal, long term customer. Stella Electric will be my first call the next time I need electrical work. Thank you, Rich and Stella Electric!
