How High Should Outlets Be From the Floor?

Get A Fast Quote

If you are wiring a new room or moving an outlet, a natural question is how high it should sit. The answer surprises many homeowners: the National Electrical Code does not set a specific required height for standard wall outlets. What exists instead is a mix of common building conventions plus a few specific rules for certain locations like countertops. Knowing both helps you place outlets that are convenient, consistent, and code-compliant.

Here is a practical guide to outlet height.

There is no strict code height for standard outlets

For general-use wall receptacles, the code focuses on spacing rather than height. The well-known rule is that outlets must be placed so no point along a wall is more than 6 feet from a receptacle, which works out to outlets roughly every 12 feet. That spacing rule is about making sure outlets are available, not about how far off the floor they sit.

So the common heights you see in homes are conventions that builders and electricians follow for consistency and convenience, not a single mandated number.

Common outlet heights by location

Here are the typical standards you will find in most homes:

Location Common height
Standard wall outlets About 12 inches from the floor to the bottom of the box, or roughly 16 inches to center
Kitchen and bath countertop outlets About 4 inches above the countertop or backsplash
Light switches About 48 inches from the floor
Garage and workshop outlets Often 18 to 48 inches for convenience

These are typical figures. The most important thing is usually consistency from outlet to outlet within a space.

The one height rule that does apply: countertops

While general outlets have no strict height, countertop receptacles do. Countertop outlets must be installed above the counter and not more than 20 inches above the countertop surface. There are also spacing rules so that no point along a kitchen counter is more than 24 inches from a receptacle. These rules keep countertop power both accessible and safe, and countertop outlets must be GFCI protected.

Accessibility considerations

If you are designing for accessibility, reach ranges matter. Accessible designs commonly place outlets no lower than about 15 inches from the floor and switches no higher than about 48 inches, so they are within comfortable reach. If accessibility is a goal in your home, mention it to your electrician so outlets and switches land in the right range.

Practical tips for placing outlets

A few things to keep in mind:

There is no single code-mandated height for standard wall outlets. Most sit about 12 inches from the floor to the bottom of the box by convention, switches around 48 inches, and countertop outlets about 4 inches above the counter, with a code limit of no more than 20 inches above the countertop. The code’s real focus for general outlets is spacing, not height. For a clean, consistent, and compliant result, especially in kitchens, baths, and accessible spaces, a licensed electrician can place everything correctly.

Daniel came to install our EV charger and did a phenomenal job. He needed to get more wire for the installation which was not in the original quote and was very transparent in what he had to do. He stayed well after 6pm to complete the work and did a stellar job and explained everything. Overall, great experience and recommend without reservation.
Response from the owner: Good Afternoon,Thank you for your kind review. We do everything in our power to keep our clients satisfied. We appreciate you and your business. We will pass your praise on to Danny our sentiment is the same! Gratefully,Stella
I called Stella Electric about flickering lights in my home and spoke with Rich. He recommended contacting BGE first, explaining that the problem could be on the utility’s supply side. He even gave me a script to avoid any pushback from the utility company - turns out it wasn’t necessary, but it still was great to have in my back pocket. He was absolutely right, and his advice saved me the cost of having an electrician come out to diagnose it.I really appreciated him taking the time to help me over the phone and steering me toward the right solution. That kind of honesty and care builds trust and earns a loyal, long term customer. Stella Electric will be my first call the next time I need electrical work. Thank you, Rich and Stella Electric!
