Why Is One Room in My House Without Power?

Get A Fast Quote

When one room in your house loses power while the rest is fine, it is usually because that room is on a circuit that has lost power, from a tripped breaker, a tripped GFCI protecting the room, or a loose or failed connection on that circuit. Because a room or area is typically served by one or a few circuits, a single circuit problem can black out just that room. Some causes you can check safely, while others need an electrician. Understanding them helps you respond.

Here is why one room in your house is without power.

The room is on an affected circuit

A room losing power while the rest of the house is fine points to a circuit that serves that room losing power. Homes are divided into circuits, often roughly by area, so a problem on the circuit feeding a room takes out that room specifically. This is why the outage is localized to one room rather than the whole house, and it tells you to look at that room’s circuit.

Check for a tripped breaker

The first thing to check is whether the breaker for that circuit has tripped. Go to your panel and look for a tripped breaker (often in a middle position), and reset it by pushing it fully off then on. If it holds, the room’s power should return. If it trips again right away, there is an ongoing fault on that circuit that needs diagnosis, so do not keep forcing it.

Check for a tripped GFCI

If no breaker is tripped, check for a tripped GFCI. A GFCI outlet can protect other outlets downstream, including ones in another room, so a GFCI tripping elsewhere can cut power to your room. Look for GFCI outlets (with test and reset buttons) in the room and in nearby bathrooms, kitchens, garages, or outdoors, and press reset. If that restores the room’s power, a tripped GFCI was the cause.

A loose or failed connection

If no breaker or GFCI is tripped, the room may have lost power because of a loose or failed connection on its circuit. A bad connection at an outlet, switch, or junction can interrupt power to everything downstream, blacking out part or all of a room. This is a wiring fault that needs a licensed electrician, and it is a safety concern, since loose connections arc and overheat. A room going dark with nothing tripped often points here.

What you can check safely

You can safely check for a tripped breaker (and reset it once, properly) and for a tripped GFCI (and press reset), which resolve many single-room outages. Beyond that, do not open outlets, switches, or wiring. If the breaker or GFCI won’t reset, trips again, or nothing is tripped to explain the outage, that is the point to call a licensed electrician to diagnose the circuit, especially if you notice any burning smell, warmth, or buzzing.

One room loses power usually because its circuit has lost power, from a tripped breaker, a tripped GFCI (which can be located in another room), or a loose or failed connection on that circuit. Safely check for a tripped breaker and reset it once, and look for a tripped GFCI and press reset. If those don’t restore power, or a device won’t reset, have a licensed electrician diagnose the circuit, since a loose connection is a hazard.

Daniel came to install our EV charger and did a phenomenal job. He needed to get more wire for the installation which was not in the original quote and was very transparent in what he had to do. He stayed well after 6pm to complete the work and did a stellar job and explained everything. Overall, great experience and recommend without reservation.

I called Stella Electric about flickering lights in my home and spoke with Rich. He recommended contacting BGE first, explaining that the problem could be on the utility’s supply side. He even gave me a script to avoid any pushback from the utility company - turns out it wasn’t necessary, but it still was great to have in my back pocket. He was absolutely right, and his advice saved me the cost of having an electrician come out to diagnose it.I really appreciated him taking the time to help me over the phone and steering me toward the right solution. That kind of honesty and care builds trust and earns a loyal, long term customer. Stella Electric will be my first call the next time I need electrical work. Thank you, Rich and Stella Electric!
