Why Do Multiple Outlets Stop Working at Once?

Get A Fast Quote

When multiple outlets stop working at once, it is usually because they are on the same circuit and a tripped breaker or a tripped GFCI has cut power to the whole group, or because a loose or failed connection somewhere on the circuit has interrupted power to everything downstream. Because outlets are wired together on circuits, one problem can take out several at once. Some causes you can check safely, while others need an electrician. Understanding them helps you respond.

Here is why multiple outlets stop working at once.

They are on the same circuit

The reason several outlets go dead together is that they are usually on the same circuit, wired in a chain. A single circuit feeds multiple outlets, so if power to that circuit is interrupted, all the outlets on it lose power at the same time. This is why the problem affects a group of outlets rather than just one, and it points to a circuit-level cause.

A tripped breaker

A common cause is a tripped breaker. If the circuit breaker for that circuit has tripped, every outlet on the circuit goes dead. Check your panel for a breaker that has tripped (often sitting in a middle position), and reset it by pushing it fully off then on. If it holds, the outlets should come back. If it trips again, there is an ongoing fault that needs diagnosis, and you should not keep forcing it.

A tripped GFCI

Another very common cause is a tripped GFCI. GFCI outlets can protect not only themselves but also other outlets downstream of them, so if a GFCI trips, all the outlets it protects go dead, even outlets in other locations. Look for a GFCI outlet (with test and reset buttons), often in a bathroom, kitchen, garage, or outdoors, and press its reset button. If that restores the dead outlets, a tripped GFCI was the cause. If it won’t reset or trips again, there is a fault to diagnose.

A loose or failed connection

If no breaker or GFCI is tripped, the cause may be a loose or failed connection on the circuit. Because outlets are often wired in a chain, a bad connection at one outlet can cut power to everything downstream of it. This is a wiring fault that needs a licensed electrician to find and fix, and it can also be a hazard, since loose connections arc and overheat. A group of outlets going dead with no tripped breaker or GFCI often points here.

What you can check safely

You can safely check two things yourself: whether a breaker has tripped (and reset it once, properly), and whether a GFCI has tripped (and press reset). These simple checks resolve many cases of multiple dead outlets. What you should not do is open outlets or poke into wiring, and if the breaker or GFCI won’t reset, trips again, or there is no tripped device to explain it, that is the point to call a licensed electrician.

Multiple outlets stop working at once usually because they share a circuit and a tripped breaker or tripped GFCI has cut power to the group, or because a loose or failed connection has interrupted power to everything downstream. Safely check for a tripped breaker and reset it once, and look for a tripped GFCI and press reset. If those don’t resolve it, or a device won’t reset, have a licensed electrician diagnose the circuit, since a loose connection can be a hazard.

Daniel came to install our EV charger and did a phenomenal job. He needed to get more wire for the installation which was not in the original quote and was very transparent in what he had to do. He stayed well after 6pm to complete the work and did a stellar job and explained everything. Overall, great experience and recommend without reservation.

I called Stella Electric about flickering lights in my home and spoke with Rich. He recommended contacting BGE first, explaining that the problem could be on the utility’s supply side. He even gave me a script to avoid any pushback from the utility company - turns out it wasn’t necessary, but it still was great to have in my back pocket. He was absolutely right, and his advice saved me the cost of having an electrician come out to diagnose it.I really appreciated him taking the time to help me over the phone and steering me toward the right solution. That kind of honesty and care builds trust and earns a loyal, long term customer. Stella Electric will be my first call the next time I need electrical work. Thank you, Rich and Stella Electric!
