What Amperage Outlet for a Level 2 EV Charger?

Get A Fast Quote

A Level 2 EV charger runs on a 240-volt circuit, and a very common setup is a NEMA 14-50 outlet on a 50-amp circuit, which supports a charger drawing up to 40 amps continuously, though the right amperage depends on the specific charger and your needs. Level 2 chargers come in different power levels, so the circuit and outlet are sized to the charger, not a single universal number. Understanding how the amperage is determined helps you plan an EV charging setup, which a licensed electrician installs.

Here is what amperage outlet a Level 2 EV charger needs.

EV charger circuit sizing depends on the specific charger’s rating and the continuous-load rules, so always confirm the correct circuit and outlet with a licensed electrician and the applicable code.

Level 2 means 240 volts

Level 2 EV charging runs on a 240-volt circuit, as opposed to Level 1 charging, which uses a standard 120-volt outlet. The 240-volt supply is what gives Level 2 its much faster charging. So any Level 2 outlet is a 240-volt outlet, and the question is really what amperage circuit it is on.

The common NEMA 14-50 on a 50-amp circuit

A very common Level 2 setup is a NEMA 14-50 outlet, the 240-volt receptacle also used for ranges, on a 50-amp circuit. On a 50-amp circuit, a plugged-in charger can draw up to 40 amps continuously, because continuous loads are limited to 80 percent of the circuit rating. Many popular Level 2 chargers are designed around this 40-amp draw, which is why the 14-50 on a 50-amp circuit is such a common choice.

It depends on the charger

The right amperage ultimately depends on the specific charger. Level 2 chargers come in various power levels, for example drawing 16, 24, 32, 40, or even 48 amps, and the circuit is sized to the charger’s requirement:

So the amperage is matched to the charger, which the manufacturer specifies and an electrician sizes to.

The continuous-load rule

A key reason the circuit is larger than the charger’s draw is the continuous-load rule. EV charging is a continuous load, and continuous loads must not exceed 80 percent of the circuit’s rating. That is why a charger drawing 40 amps needs a 50-amp circuit (40 is 80 percent of 50). This rule is central to sizing EV charging circuits and is why you cannot simply match the breaker to the charger’s amperage.

Outlet vs hardwired

Level 2 chargers can connect through an outlet (like a NEMA 14-50) or be hardwired directly. Lower and mid-power chargers often use an outlet, while higher-power chargers, such as 48-amp units, are typically hardwired. The choice affects the setup, and an electrician advises which suits your charger and installation. Either way, the circuit is sized for the charger and the continuous-load rule.

A Level 2 EV charger runs on a 240-volt circuit, and a common setup is a NEMA 14-50 outlet on a 50-amp circuit, supporting a charger that draws up to 40 amps continuously. But the right amperage depends on the specific charger, since Level 2 units come in different power levels and the circuit is sized to the charger plus the 80 percent continuous-load rule. A licensed electrician sizes and installs the right circuit and outlet or hardwired connection.

Daniel came to install our EV charger and did a phenomenal job. He needed to get more wire for the installation which was not in the original quote and was very transparent in what he had to do. He stayed well after 6pm to complete the work and did a stellar job and explained everything. Overall, great experience and recommend without reservation.
Response from the owner: Good Afternoon,Thank you for your kind review. We do everything in our power to keep our clients satisfied. We appreciate you and your business. We will pass your praise on to Danny our sentiment is the same! Gratefully,Stella
I called Stella Electric about flickering lights in my home and spoke with Rich. He recommended contacting BGE first, explaining that the problem could be on the utility’s supply side. He even gave me a script to avoid any pushback from the utility company - turns out it wasn’t necessary, but it still was great to have in my back pocket. He was absolutely right, and his advice saved me the cost of having an electrician come out to diagnose it.I really appreciated him taking the time to help me over the phone and steering me toward the right solution. That kind of honesty and care builds trust and earns a loyal, long term customer. Stella Electric will be my first call the next time I need electrical work. Thank you, Rich and Stella Electric!
Response from the owner: Thank you for the kind review Ian! We hope to connect with you on a project in the future, and appreciate you.Gratefully,Stella
We needed to have a generator plug installed, and Daniel was our technician. He was very polite and professional, took the time to explain everything, and made sure we understood the work being done. Unlike those who rush through a job, Daniel made sure all our questions were answered. We will definitely be using Stella Electric again for our future electrical needs!
Response from the owner: Thank you for your review Alex! We appreciate you considering us for this project and hope to connect with you on future ones!Gratefully,Stella
