What Is Bonding vs Grounding in an Electrical Panel?

Get A Fast Quote

Bonding and grounding are two of the most commonly confused terms in electrical work, and while they are related, they do different jobs. In simple terms, grounding connects your electrical system to the earth, while bonding connects metal parts together to create a safe path for fault current. Both are essential safety features, and understanding the difference helps make sense of how your panel keeps you safe.

Here is what bonding versus grounding means in an electrical panel.

What grounding is

Grounding connects the electrical system to the earth, typically through ground rods or other grounding electrodes. This earth connection helps stabilize the system’s voltage and provides a path for certain events, such as lightning-induced surges, to dissipate into the ground. Grounding is your system’s reference to the earth.

What bonding is

Bonding connects all the metal parts of the electrical system together, such as enclosures, conduit, and equipment, so they are electrically joined. The purpose is to create a low-impedance path that lets fault current flow back to its source and trip the breaker quickly. Bonding also ensures that metal parts stay at the same electrical potential, so there is no dangerous voltage difference between them that could shock someone who touches them.

In short, bonding is what actually clears a fault and keeps metal parts safe to touch, while grounding provides the earth reference.

The main bonding jumper

A key point inside the panel is the main bonding jumper. At the service, the grounded conductor, the neutral, is bonded to the equipment grounding system and the enclosure. This connection, made only at the service, is what allows fault current to return and clear a fault. It is a critical, code-defined connection.

Why neutral and ground are separated in subpanels

Here is where many people get confused. The neutral-to-ground bond is made only at the main service, not in subpanels. In a subpanel, the neutral and ground must be kept separate, with the neutral on an isolated bus and the ground bonded to the enclosure. If the neutral and ground are improperly bonded together in a subpanel, it creates a hazardous condition where current can travel on paths it should not. This is a common wiring error that a licensed electrician knows to avoid.

Why both matter

Grounding and bonding work together but serve different safety roles:

A safe electrical system needs both, correctly done. Improper grounding or bonding can leave a system unable to clear faults safely, which is a serious hazard. This is why these details are handled carefully by licensed electricians and verified during inspections.

Grounding connects your electrical system to the earth for voltage stability and surge paths, while bonding ties metal parts together to create a safe, low-impedance path for fault current and keep everything at the same potential. The neutral-to-ground bond is made only at the main service, and neutral and ground are kept separate in subpanels. Both grounding and bonding are essential, code-required safety features, which is why they should be handled by a licensed electrician.
