Bathroom Remodel Electrical Requirements

Get A Fast Quote

Bathrooms combine electricity and water in close quarters, which is why they have specific electrical requirements focused on safety. A remodel is the time to meet current code, from ground-fault protection to proper outlet placement and ventilation. Understanding these requirements helps you plan a bathroom that is safe, comfortable, and passes inspection.

Here are the key electrical requirements for a bathroom remodel.

Code requirements vary by edition and jurisdiction, so confirm the specifics that apply to your project with a licensed electrician and your local authority.

A dedicated 20-amp circuit

Bathrooms require dedicated circuit capacity. Code calls for at least one 20-amp circuit to serve bathroom receptacles. This circuit can either serve the receptacles in more than one bathroom, or serve all the devices in a single bathroom, depending on how it is wired. This ensures the outlets, which may power hair dryers and other higher-draw devices, have adequate capacity.

GFCI protection

Ground-fault protection is essential in a bathroom. Code requires GFCI protection for all bathroom receptacles, without exception. Because outlets are close to sinks, tubs, and wet hands, GFCI protection is one of the most important safety features in the room, cutting power instantly if it detects a fault.

Outlet placement near the sink

Code requires a receptacle to be installed within 3 feet of the outside edge of each bathroom sink basin. This ensures convenient, safe access to power at the vanity without stretching cords across the room or near water. In a remodel, outlet locations are planned around the sink and vanity layout.

Ventilation

Proper ventilation is a key part of a bathroom, both for comfort and to control the moisture that can damage the room and promote mold. An exhaust fan is commonly required, especially in bathrooms without an operable window, and local codes often mandate it. Fans are frequently combined with a light, and they need to be wired and vented correctly.

Lighting and wet-location fixtures

Lighting in a bathroom must account for moisture. Key points include:

A remodel is a good time to plan vanity lighting, overhead lighting, and any shower lighting with the correct fixtures.

Other considerations

Depending on your remodel, you may add features that need their own attention, such as heated floors, a heated towel rack, or other higher-draw items, which may require dedicated circuits. Your electrician plans for these so the bathroom’s circuits are not overloaded.

Permits and capacity

A bathroom remodel involving electrical work requires a permit and inspection, performed by a licensed electrician, including a rough-in inspection before the walls are closed. Your electrician also confirms your panel can support the added circuits and any new features, recommending an upgrade if needed.

Bathroom remodel electrical requirements include a dedicated 20-amp circuit for receptacles, GFCI protection for all bathroom outlets, a receptacle within 3 feet of each sink, proper ventilation with an exhaust fan, and wet or damp-rated fixtures near tubs and showers. The work requires permits and inspection and may need added capacity. Because the room mixes water and electricity, a licensed electrician should plan and perform the work.
