What Is a Backfed Breaker?

Get A Fast Quote

A backfed breaker is a breaker that sends power into an electrical panel instead of drawing power out of it. Normally, a breaker feeds electricity from the panel out to a circuit. A backfed breaker reverses that flow, bringing power from a source like a solar system or a generator into the panel, where it can supply the home. It is a common and code-recognized setup, but it comes with specific safety requirements.

Here is what a backfed breaker is and how it works.

How a normal breaker compares

In a typical panel, the main breaker brings utility power in, and each branch breaker distributes that power out to circuits for lights, outlets, and appliances. Power flows from the panel to the loads.

A backfed breaker works in the opposite direction. Rather than feeding a load, it accepts power from an external source and pushes it into the panel’s bus, adding to what the utility supplies. That is why it is called “backfed.”

Where backfed breakers are used

Backfed breakers are most commonly found in two situations:

The key safety requirement

Because a backfed breaker has power coming into it from an external source, there is a real hazard if the breaker could be pulled loose from the bus while still energized. To address this, code requires backfed breakers that are not bolted on, such as common plug-on breakers, to be secured in place with a fastener or hold-down clip so they cannot be removed without an extra step.

This hold-down requirement is an important detail that a licensed electrician handles as part of a proper installation. It is one of the reasons solar and generator connections should never be improvised.

Backfeeding and preventing utility conflicts

Any time a home has a power source that can feed the panel, there must be protection against sending power back onto the utility grid when it is not supposed to, which can endanger utility workers and equipment. Grid-tied solar inverters are designed to stop feeding power during an outage, and generator installations use transfer switches or interlocks to keep the two sources separated. These protections are essential and are part of a code-compliant backfed connection.

Why it should be done professionally

A backfed breaker connects an energized source to your panel, so correct sizing, placement, hold-down hardware, and anti-backfeed protection all matter for safety. Getting any of these wrong can create shock hazards, overload the busbar, or endanger utility workers. A licensed electrician, coordinating with your solar or generator installer, ensures the connection meets code.

A backfed breaker feeds power into a panel from a source like solar or a generator, rather than drawing power out to a circuit. It is a standard way to interconnect these sources, but it requires specific safeguards: a hold-down clip to secure the breaker, compliance with the busbar limits, and protection to prevent unwanted backfeed to the grid. Because of those requirements, a backfed connection should always be installed by a licensed electrician.

Stella Electric installs solar-ready and generator connections with proper backfed breaker setups for homeowners across the Baltimore area and throughout Maryland, with flat-rate pricing and no overtime charges. If you are adding a generator or preparing for solar, we will connect it safely and to code. Financing is available on qualifying projects.
