Do Solar Panels Require an Electrical Panel Upgrade?

Get A Fast Quote

Not always. Adding solar to your home does not automatically mean you need a new electrical panel. Whether an upgrade is required comes down to your panel’s busbar rating, your main breaker size, and how much solar you are connecting. Many homes can add solar with the panel they have, while others need more capacity or a different interconnection method.

Here is what determines whether solar requires a panel upgrade.

The 120% rule is the deciding factor

When solar connects to your panel through a backfed breaker, the National Electrical Code limits how much power the busbar can handle from all sources combined. This is commonly called the 120% rule, from NEC 705.12.

In plain terms, your main breaker feeds power in from the utility, and the solar breaker feeds power in from your system. The code says the main breaker rating plus 125 percent of the solar inverter’s output current cannot exceed 120 percent of the busbar’s rating, with the solar breaker placed at the opposite end of the bus from the main. This buffer prevents the busbar from being overloaded when both sources push power at once.

A typical example

Consider a common setup: a 200-amp busbar with a 200-amp main breaker.

If your solar system fits within that headroom, you likely do not need a panel upgrade. If it needs more, you have exceeded the busbar limit and must do something about it.

When you probably do not need an upgrade

You are more likely to be fine without an upgrade when:

When you might need one

An upgrade becomes more likely when:

Alternatives to a full upgrade

Upgrading is not the only path when a system does not fit the 120% rule. Depending on your setup, an installer and electrician may use:

Which option is right depends on your panel, your loads, and current code, and it should be evaluated by a professional.

Getting it evaluated

Because the answer depends on specific numbers, the reliable way to know is to have your panel evaluated. An electrician can read your busbar and main breaker ratings, run a load calculation, and determine whether your panel is solar-ready, needs a derate or alternative interconnection, or would benefit from an upgrade. If you are planning solar, doing this early helps you budget and avoid surprises.

Solar panels do not always require an electrical panel upgrade. It depends on the 120% rule, which weighs your main breaker and solar output against your busbar rating. Modern panels with headroom often accommodate solar as is, while undersized, full, or obsolete panels may need an upgrade, though alternatives like a main breaker derate or a line-side tap can sometimes avoid one. A professional evaluation gives you the definitive answer.
