Signs of a Corroded or Rusted Electrical Panel

Get A Fast Quote

Rust and corrosion inside an electrical panel are more than a cosmetic problem. Corrosion attacks the metal connections that carry current, leading to poor contact, overheating, arcing, and shock or fire risk. Because a panel controls your home’s entire electrical system, catching corrosion early is important. Often the outside of the panel gives clues before the inside fails.

Here are the signs of a corroded or rusted electrical panel and what they mean.

Warning signs to look for

You can spot several signs without opening the panel’s inner cover:

Signs that point to corrosion affecting the electrical parts, which should be checked by an electrician, include:

What causes panel corrosion

Corrosion almost always traces back to moisture. Common sources include:

Once moisture reaches the metal bus, breakers, and connections, corrosion begins, and it worsens over time.

Why a corroded panel is dangerous

Corrosion degrades the metal-to-metal connections that electricity relies on. As those connections corrode, resistance increases, which produces heat and can lead to arcing. Corroded breakers may not trip properly, and corroded bus connections can overheat. The combination of moisture and electricity also raises the risk of shock. In short, a corroded panel may not protect your circuits reliably and can become a fire or shock hazard.

What to do about it

If you notice rust or corrosion:

Light surface rust on the outside of an enclosure may be less urgent than corrosion reaching the breakers and bus, but only an electrician can tell how far it has progressed. Because corrosion is driven by moisture, fixing the water source is just as important as addressing the panel.

Signs of a corroded or rusted electrical panel include visible rust on the enclosure, water stains nearby, breakers that trip or stick, flickering lights, buzzing, and heat. Corrosion is caused by moisture and is dangerous because it degrades the connections your panel depends on, raising the risk of overheating, arcing, and shock. If you see these signs, have a licensed electrician evaluate the panel and address the moisture source.
