How Long Can a Whole House Generator Run Continuously?

Get A Fast Quote

When the power goes out for days, the question every homeowner wants answered is simple: how long can my whole house generator keep running? The honest answer is that it depends, mainly on your fuel type, but also on the generator’s size, how much power you are using, and how well the unit is maintained. Some setups can run for many days, and some can run far longer.

Here is a realistic look at how long a whole house generator can run continuously and what sets the limit.

Fuel type is the biggest factor

The single largest factor in runtime is what fuels the generator.

Natural gas

A whole house generator connected to your utility natural gas line has a continuous fuel supply, so it can run for very long periods. In practice, the limit is usually maintenance rather than fuel. As long as the gas supply holds and you keep up with oil and service, a natural gas standby generator can run through even a lengthy outage. It is worth knowing that natural gas service can occasionally be interrupted during major events, though this is uncommon.

Propane

A propane generator runs off a tank, so its runtime is tied directly to tank size and how hard the unit is working. As a rough example, a large air-cooled standby unit at moderate load can burn a few gallons of propane per hour. Keep in mind that a propane tank is filled to about 80 percent and is not run all the way to empty, so the usable fuel is less than the tank’s rated size. Depending on tank size and load, propane runtimes typically range from a couple of days to more than a week, and larger tanks extend that further.

Diesel

Diesel standby generators also run off a tank, so runtime depends on tank capacity and load. Diesel engines commonly run for several hundred hours between major service intervals, and refueling extends operation as long as fuel is available.

Maintenance is the real ceiling for long outages

Even with unlimited fuel, a generator cannot run forever without service. Engine oil and filters need attention during extended operation. Manufacturers publish oil change intervals, commonly in the range of every 100 to 200 hours of run time, and it is wise to check the oil level regularly during a long outage.

For very long runs, some manufacturers recommend a brief shutdown to change the oil and check the unit. Skipping maintenance to keep a generator running non-stop risks damaging the engine, so plan for service during multi-day outages rather than pushing past the recommended intervals.

Load and size also matter

How much power you draw affects both fuel consumption and wear:

Managing your load during an outage, for example by not running every large appliance at once, is a practical way to extend runtime.

Runtime by fuel type at a glance

Fuel type Typical continuous runtime Main limit
Natural gas Very long periods through an outage Maintenance and gas supply
Propane A couple of days to over a week Tank size and load
Diesel Tank-dependent, hundreds of hours between major service Tank size and service intervals

These are general ranges. Your actual runtime depends on your specific unit, tank size, load, and maintenance.
