A summer thunderstorm can turn a normal evening into a dark, hot, and frustrating one in minutes. Winter ice, high winds, and overloaded equipment can do the same across Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic. Knowing how to prepare for a power outage before weather moves in gives your household more than convenience - it gives you safer choices when the lights go out.

A good outage plan is not about buying every gadget on the shelf. It is about protecting your family, preserving essential food and medication, avoiding electrical hazards, and having a clear plan for the first few hours. Start with what your household truly needs, then build from there.

How to Prepare for a Power Outage Before Storm Season

Preparation works best when it is done on an ordinary day. Waiting until a storm warning is issued often means stores are sold out, batteries are dead, and the generator has not been tested since last year.

Begin by identifying the systems your home depends on. For many households, that means refrigeration, a sump pump, heat or air conditioning, medical equipment, internet access, garage-door operation, and phone charging. A family with a finished basement may put sump pump backup at the top of the list. Someone who relies on refrigerated medication or powered medical equipment will need a more detailed backup-power plan.

Make sure everyone in the home knows where to find flashlights, the first-aid kit, emergency contacts, and the electrical panel. A simple printed list is useful because phones and home internet may not be available. If your children are old enough, show them which areas of the home to avoid during an outage, including a dark basement, garage, or utility room.

Your emergency supply area should include at least these essentials:

  • Flashlights and extra batteries for each household member
  • A battery-powered or hand-crank radio for local alerts
  • A first-aid kit, needed medications, and basic personal-care items
  • Bottled water and shelf-stable food that does not require cooking
  • Phone power banks, charging cords, and a manual can opener
  • A cooler and ice packs for protecting food or medication when needed

Choose flashlights instead of candles whenever possible. Candles create a fire risk, especially around children, pets, curtains, and cluttered rooms. Battery lanterns are especially helpful for kitchens, bathrooms, and stairways where people need hands-free light.

Protect Food, Medicine, and Comfort

During an outage, keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. An unopened refrigerator generally keeps food cold for about four hours. A full freezer can typically hold a safe temperature for about 48 hours, or around 24 hours if it is only half full. Those timeframes can vary with room temperature and how often the doors are opened, so when there is doubt, throw it out.

Keep a thermometer in both the refrigerator and freezer so you are not forced to guess. Food that has been above 40 degrees Fahrenheit for more than two hours should generally be discarded. Do not rely on smell or appearance to decide whether food is safe.

If anyone in the household uses medication that needs refrigeration, speak with the pharmacist or prescribing provider before storm season. Ask how long the medication can remain at room temperature and what backup storage options make sense. For a household with critical medical needs, a professionally installed standby generator may be more appropriate than a portable unit or battery pack.

Comfort matters, too, especially during Baltimore-area heat waves or freezing weather. Keep blankets, warm layers, and sleeping bags accessible for cold-weather outages. During hot conditions, stay hydrated, close blinds against direct sun, and use cooler lower levels of the home if they are safe and dry. Never run a vehicle in the garage to warm up or charge devices. Carbon monoxide can build up quickly, even with the garage door open.

Use Backup Power Without Creating a Hazard

Backup power can make an outage far easier, but it must be selected and used correctly. A portable generator may run a refrigerator, sump pump, lights, or select outlets, depending on its capacity. A standby generator can automatically power designated circuits or much of the home after an outage. The right option depends on your budget, electrical load, and which systems cannot be without power.

Portable generators must always operate outdoors, well away from windows, doors, vents, and attached garages. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, and generator exhaust can be deadly. Install working carbon monoxide alarms on each level of your home and near sleeping areas.

Never connect a portable generator directly to a wall outlet. This dangerous shortcut, sometimes called backfeeding, can energize utility lines and put utility workers, neighbors, and your home at risk. It can also damage appliances and electrical equipment when power returns.

A licensed electrician can install a transfer switch or generator interlock that lets you use a generator safely. This equipment separates generator power from the utility supply and gives you a controlled way to energize approved circuits. If your home has an electric well pump, sump pump, EV charger, or major heating equipment, have a professional calculate the load before deciding on generator size.

Battery backup systems are another option for homeowners who want quiet indoor power for limited essentials. They are useful for phones, lights, routers, and some medical devices, but they may not support large loads such as central air conditioning, electric ranges, or electric water heaters for long. Understanding those limits before an outage prevents disappointment later.

Prepare Your Electrical System for the Return of Power

The outage itself is only part of the risk. Power restoration can bring voltage spikes that damage sensitive electronics, appliances, smart-home equipment, and EV charging equipment. Unplug nonessential electronics before power returns if practical, especially computers, televisions, and charging devices.

Whole-home surge protection installed at the electrical panel adds a strong first layer of defense. It does not replace point-of-use surge strips for sensitive electronics, but it can help protect connected systems throughout the home from many power-related surges. This is particularly valuable for homes with newer appliances, smart thermostats, security systems, and connected lighting.

If your lights have been flickering, breakers trip regularly, outlets feel warm, or you notice a burning smell before or after an outage, do not treat those signs as normal storm behavior. Turn off power to the affected area if it is safe to do so and call a qualified electrician. Do not reset a breaker repeatedly or attempt to remove an electrical-panel cover yourself.

Older homes may also benefit from a panel inspection before relying on a generator or adding new electrical loads. An outdated panel, deteriorated wiring, or improperly installed equipment can become more apparent during a power event. A professional inspection provides a clear picture of what your system can safely handle.

What to Do When the Power Goes Out

When the lights go out, pause before reacting. Check whether the outage affects just your home or nearby homes as well. Look outside from a safe location, but stay away from any fallen trees, downed lines, or damaged service equipment. Treat every downed wire as energized and keep children and pets far away.

Turn off or unplug major appliances and sensitive electronics to reduce strain when service is restored. Leave one light switched on so you know when power returns. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed, use flashlights for light, and monitor local alerts by phone or battery-powered radio.

If you use a portable generator, set it up outdoors only after reviewing its operating instructions. Let it cool before refueling, and keep fuel stored in an approved container away from living areas and ignition sources. If you smell gas, see sparking, hear unusual buzzing at the panel, or see water near electrical equipment, stay clear and call for professional help.
