A dimmer that hums, buzzes, or vibrates can make an otherwise comfortable room feel like something is wrong behind the wall. Sometimes the cause is as simple as an incompatible LED bulb. Other times, the sound points to a failing switch, an overloaded circuit, or a loose electrical connection that deserves prompt attention. Knowing how to troubleshoot a buzzing dimmer helps you separate a minor lighting issue from a reason to call a qualified electrician.
Start With the Sound and the Situation
Not every dimmer makes the same sound, and the details matter. A faint hum that occurs only when lights are dimmed may be caused by the way a dimmer controls power. A sharp buzz, crackling sound, hot switch plate, burning smell, or flickering lights is different. Those symptoms can indicate a poor connection, damaged component, or wiring problem.

Try a Simple Isolation Test
With the power on and the switch operating normally, raise the lights to full brightness and slowly lower them. If the buzzing appears at only one point in the dimming range, the issue may be a compatibility or calibration problem rather than a loose wire.
Then turn the lights off and replace one suspect bulb with a known compatible dimmable LED. If the sound changes or disappears, continue replacing mismatched bulbs. If the buzz remains exactly the same, the dimmer or fixture may be the source.

Some dimmer models must be de-rated in these installations, meaning their usable wattage capacity is lower than the number printed on the front.
LED loads can complicate this calculation. Their actual wattage is lower than incandescent bulbs, but some dimmers use an LED-specific rating that differs from the incandescent rating. Consider the Fixture, Not Just the Switch
