I want recessed lighting, but I'm unsure how many I need.

A good rule of thumb for budgeting is that the diameter of the light is equal to the footage in space.

  • So if you want 4" recessed lights, you would want them every 4' on center for sufficient light spread.
  • If you use 6" lights, you would want 6' in between.

For example, in a rectangular room that is 14' wide by 20' long, and using 6" recessed lights, we would recommend (2) rows of 3 lights lengthwise and equidistant for symmetry and consistent light spread. If you're unsure, just get in touch with us and we can help!

What is the difference between LED wafer lights and conventional recessed lights?

Every lighting choice has Pros and Cons. We find the pros for LED outweigh the Cons for most lighting installations. With LED wafers they can be installed overtop of framing members or in shallow channels, this allows for on center spacing in a room. Some of the old cans and housings may not be able to accomodate equal and visually appealing spacing in a retrofit application. LED wafer lights also allow for adjustable light color, so if down the road you change the space from a relaxing space think "warm yellow" to a task space think "daylight", all you have to do is adjust a switch instead of purchasing new lamps.

I have recessed lights that pulsate or flash on my dimmer, what's going on?

Sometimes less experienced installers may put new recessed lighting on an existing dimmer switch that formerly controlled an "incandescent lighting load". It's important to note, not all dimmer switches are made equal. You must make sure the switch used is rated for dimming LED loads, and that the LED lights being used are dimmable.

Recessed Lighting Installation in the Baltimore Area

Pendant lighting which hangs down from the ceiling and lighting fixtures mounted on walls can be optimal for lighting a workspace or a particular gathering area. But for those who would like other aspects of their home to shine brightest, recessed lighting can provide that omnipresent glow.

Stella electricians are trained on a variety of recessed lighting fixtures. While some people have the incorrect notion that all recessed lighting looks the same, there are several different options for using the technique to light a room or area in your home. Another everyday use of recessed lighting is to draw the eye to a prized object or work of art.

The bulbs for recessed lights are energy-efficient and low voltage, thus saving you essential money on those electricity bills. A room lit by a bunch of straggler lights - that shell lamp you made one summer, an old standing lamp and your decorative fixture that uses candlelight bulbs - won’t do any harm, but it’s also not as energy-efficient as lighting your space with recessed bulbs.

What to Consider Before Installing Recessed Lighting

One potentially complicating factor with recessed lighting is that holes must be carved in your ceilings, and then wiring installed above to power the lights correctly. If you are the type of person who will want a different lighting scheme a few years from now, recessed lights might not be a wise investment.

The cost of recessed lighting for an ample space could be a deterring factor as well. The initial installation costs for can lights and pot lights can feel high for what you’re getting, however, because they add light and ambiance without interfering with sight lines, most homeowners find the cost worth it. Recessed lights are particularly attractive for rooms with lower ceiling heights.
